Choose Your Camping Equipment: One Tent or Two?

If you are about to go on a significant camping trip, it’s important that you have the right equipment. This applies to everything, but it is especially important when selecting your tent. For example, if you are camping with a family or a larger group, you will have to decide between bringing multiple small tents or one bigger tent, such as a four man tent, which will fit your whole group.

four man tentsWhen making this decision, you need to consider the kind of group you are travelling with. If you are travelling with a group of couples, it’s best to get a tent for each pair so that everyone can have some privacy. Families, on the other hand, will more likely prefer sharing bigger tents as it means less bulk to carry, and children might get scared if left alone in a tent at night. If you have a really large group, you can even consider getting a tent bigger than a four man tent, though staying together is likely to be a bit claustrophobic, especially if you are dealing with a group of adults. Tents that are much larger than four man tents can also start to get a cumbersome to carry and set up.

You also need to consider the terrain where you will be camping when deciding how many tents you bring. If you are camping in the middle of the forest, you will struggle to find space to place very large tents, so it is best to bring smaller ones. On the other hand, controlled camp grounds will often charge you based on the number of tents you bring, so you can cut costs by piling into one.

Finally, you have to consider bulk. After all, if you are hiking 20 miles and need to carry your tent with you, you don’t want to lug five different tents around with you. You also probably don’t want to be carrying a huge and heavy tent. So be prepared to make some sacrifices in the name of lessening your burden and figure out the best way to have the shelter you need without having to bring more than you really need. If being well-equipped is the first rule of camping, the second one is to avoid taking unnecessary things.

Having an amazing time in the great outdoors is largely about preparation, and you need to dedicate some effort to carefully planning what equipment you are going to take based on the specific conditions in which you will be camping. If you only have one tent but need more or need a different type of tent, you can often borrow something suitable from a friend or rent a tent from an outdoors store to ensure that you are perfectly prepared for your trip.
