Metal Carport Garage vs. Portable Metal Carport

When it comes to choosing a carport, there are many options.  From wooden carports to metal carports, permanent carports to portable carports, the possibilities are virtually endless.  So with all of the types of carports and carport materials available, why choose a metal carport?  And which type of metal carport should you choose?

There are primarily two types of metal carports.  In the first type, the carport is constructed completely of metal.  This means that the support structures are metal as well as the roof.  This type of metal roof carport is often referred to as a metal carport garage and is not a portable structure.  A metal carport garage is built in a similar fashion to a wooden carport.  The metal support poles are set up and secured permanently into the ground so that the carport garage does not move and then a roof made of metal is secured above it at whatever height is desired to complete the structure.  Some metal carport garages also have sides on one, two, three or even all four sides, which encloses the structure in order to make it more like a portable garage than a carport (which is more typically left open on the sides, or on at least two sides).

Metal carport garages can be free standing metal carports or they can be attached to the side of a home or building.  Whether the metal carport is attached or freestanding, the structure is not considered portable.  Many people that elect to build their own metal carport garage or permanent metal carport structure opt to use metal carport kits.  Metal carport kits contain all of the supplies and instructions needed to build your own carport and are especially useful if you don’t really know how to build a metal carport but don’t want to hire a professional contractor.

The second type of metal carport commonly used is a portable metal carport.  Unlike a more permanent metal carport garage, portable metal carports can be easily assembled whenever and wherever they are needed and disassembled when they are not.  Since these structures are portable, they are not completely constructed from metal, even though they are referred to as metal carports.  A portable metal carport is constructed from a set of metal support legs and structures, but the carport canopy is not made from metal.  Instead, it is typically made from a heavy duty canvas or vinyl material that is draped over the metal support beams and secured to the sides to provide overhead protection.  This type of portable carport functions in a similar fashion as a pop up gazebo tent, although the materials used to construct it are heavier weight and more durable to withstand the larger size of the structure.

There is still another type of metal carport that is different than the ones already described above.  These are metal carport awnings or simply metal carport covers.  A metal carport cover or awning is a metal roof that is supported on one side by the home or building that it is attached to and then it only has two supporting poles on the opposite side of the structure to support the open edge.  The metal awning or cover is permanently secured to the side of the building at an appropriate height and then offers a protected span under which a car or vehicle can be parked.  This style of carport is similar to the metal carport garage, but is less of a complete structure than the carport garage is.  It is almost like a porch awning or patio cover that is attached to the outside wall of a home and then extends to provide protection over a porch or patio, except that the space it is protecting is where you park your car or other vehicle.

Metal carports and garages are a popular choice for those looking to buy a carport to protect their car, truck, boat, RV or other vehicle.  This is because they are durable, long lasting, low maintenance and fairly easy to construct or install.  By using a metal carport kit to assemble a permanent or stationary metal carport garage or using a portable metal carport that sets up quickly and easily, you can have added protection for your car without needing to embark on a huge construction project.
