Installing a Deck Canopy

A deck canopy is a great way to protect your deck and its occupants from the sun, rain and wind, allowing you to enjoy your deck no matter what the weather is like outside.  Deck canopies are similar to patio covers and retractable or roll up awnings in function, with a few small differences.

Unlike a patio cover that is constructed from solid wood or metal or can have a canvas or fabric cover, an outdoor deck canopy is almost always constructed from a system of metal or aluminum support poles covered by canvas, fabric or vinyl.    And unlike a retractable or roll up patio or porch awning, a deck canopy is usually a stationary structure that does not roll up or retract and remains in place.  You can find a retractable deck canopy if that is what you want, but most canopies for decks are more permanent structures.

deck canopyThe major benefit resulting from the difference between deck canopys and porch covers or retractable awnings, is that a deck canopy is a less expensive option for offering overhead protection than other types of outdoor coverings.  The more attractive pricing is due to the type of materials required to build and install a deck canopy, as well as the labor involved in installing the canopy.

The most popular style of a deck shade canopy is constructed from a rigid framework of aluminum or steel support poles and beams that are covered by a canvas, vinyl or acrylic coated fabric cover.  The canopy remains stationary and most attach to the side of the house and the surface or railing of the deck with minimal installation.  Although the support structure of the deck canopy remains stationary, the canvas or fabric coating can be removed during the winter months if desired and then reattached when the weather starts to warm.  The covering requires some work to attach and detach so you would not want to continually take the covering down and then put it back up, but you can do so once a year to maintain the longevity of the covering if you live in a location that experiences severe winter weather or if severe winds are predicted.

This type of canopy for deck use usually just has an overhead covering but no side coverings, although if you are looking for one or more sides to be covered by fabric in order to protect you from wind or to provide some privacy, most manufacturers of deck canopies can probably accommodate your request.  Most companies provide custom deck canopies to perfectly fit the size and shape of your deck space, so you can usually have the company change the deck canopy plans to accommodate other options, such as a side panel, if you would like.

Installing a deck canopy is usually rather simple.  Some structures require that you install a wood support beam along the exterior of the home in order to attach the canopy support structure to, but many just require that you attach the support system directly to the house and come with pre-drilled holes as well as all of the fittings needed to attach the overhead support system to the house and the support poles to the deck.  Once the main support system is securely installed, the canvas or fabric covering is then extended over the canopy supports and are attached at preset locations.

You can buy deck canopies from companies that sell awnings and porch coverings in your area, or you can even buy deck canopies online.  Since the system of support poles is rather lightweight, you can actually order a deck canopy online, have it shipped to you, and install the deck canopy yourself without needing advanced carpentry skills.  You can also order custom deck canopy replacement covers online so that if your fabric or canvas covering rips or shows signs of wear, or if you just want a change of décor, you can replace just the deck canopy covering without having to replace the entire system.

Deck canopy prices will vary depending on the size of the canopy, whether the support structure is constructed from aluminum, powder coated aluminum, or steel, and what type of fabric is used for the canopy covering.  Since most deck canopies are custom ordered, the best way to compare prices is to inquire online at a few different companies to find out what it would cost to construct a deck canopy in the size and style you need with the options you want.

Installing a deck canopy is a great option for those that live in climates that get very hot or experience a lot of rain.  By offering shade protection, the deck space can remain cooler since the canopy shades the deck from the sun and keeps it cooler.  Since a deck canopy also protects the deck from rain, the deck can even be enjoyed on a rainy day.  Another benefit is that outdoor deck furniture or even the wood of the deck lasts longer because it is not constantly exposed to sun and moisture.  Deck canopies also protect homeowners and their guests from the dangers caused by excessive sun exposure.
