Types of Campervan Awnings

If you have a campervan and love traveling around the country and camping out in it, then owning a campervan awning provides you with some shelter from the weather when you step outside the van.  Campervan awnings are similar to caravan awnings or motorhome awnings in that they provide some very useable outdoor space outside of your vehicle.  The awnings can easily be put up when staying at a campsite or at another stationary location and then taken down when you are ready to hit the open road.

There are two main types of campervan awnings.  The first one is called a fixed campervan awning.  This type of awning is made to attach to the side of your campervan above the door and to extend out, providing overhead roof protection for when you want to sit outside of the van but want to be shielded from the sun or the rain.  Fixed campervan awnings only have a roof overhead and do not have any protective side panels on them to offer privacy or protect you from the wind.

Another type of awning for campervans is a freestanding campervan awning.  This type of awning does not actually attach to the van itself, but is set up just outside of the campervan when you are parked at a campsite or other location.  Freestanding awnings for campervans provide not only a roof overhead, but protective sides as well, so you can enjoy a bit more privacy when sitting within them.  They are also good at shielding you from the wind.

No matter which type of awning you choose, you will need to take down your campervan awning whenever you are ready to travel on the road since they are not like roll up awnings and cannot simply retract into the side of the van.  It is still worth having one for when your van is parked, since they are fairly easy to set up and break down and for those that enjoy using their campervan to travel, having a campervan awning provides a sheltered outdoor space within which to enjoy.

You can find campervan awnings for sale from companies that sell campervan accessories or from awning companies that supply models for other types of vehicles.  If you’re looking to save some money, you may even find used campervan awnings by looking at places like Ebay, Craigslist and Amazon.  There is a range of campervan awning prices, depending on the size you need and the style you choose, but you should be able to find an awning to suit your needs while staying within your budget.
