Buying a 4 Man Tent

When you are shopping for a tent, you will often see tents referred to as being either a 1 man tent, 2 man tent, 3 man tent, or 4 man tent.  The titles are meant to give consumers some insight into how many people the tent will hold, but that title can sometimes be deceiving.  This is because what the manufacturer indicates a tent will hold and how many people it fits comfortably may be two different things.  For example, if you are looking for a tent for two people, you are probably better off with a 3 man tent or even a 4 man tent if you want to have some room to move around.

Of all the different types of tents, 4 man tents are probably the most popular because even if 4 people aren’t sleeping in the tent, a 4 man tent provides extra room for the 2 or 3 people that are in it, as well as their camping supplies, and a 4 man tent does not usually cost that much more than smaller tents, so it’s worth the extra investment.  A 4 man tent is also sometimes referred to as a family tent, because as you guessed, it can comfortably fit a family, although there are family tents that are even larger than 4 man tents if you need even more space.

tentsOnce you have decided that you are best off getting a 4 man tent as compared to another size tent, you will then still have some decisions to make regarding which type of tent material and style will best suit your needs.  You can get 4 man tents as either nylon or canvas tents, although you will often find the more popular styles are constructed from nylon (for more information on the pros and cons of both nylon and canvas tents, check out our article “Canvas Tent vs. Nylon Tent – Which Is Better?”).   A 4 man camping tent can also come in a variety of styles.  You can choose from among a 4 man pop up tent, a 4 man dome tent, a 4 man wall tent, a 4 man backpacking tent, or a 4 man quick set tent, among others.

A 4 man pop up tent is simple to use because there is no assembly involved.  You simply need to take it out of its storage bag and it easily and quickly pops open for instant shelter.  A 4 man dome tent is also easy to set up and gets its name from the dome shape of the tent.   It is one of the most popular models of 4 man tents, although like many of the other types of tents, may be a tight squeeze for 4 people.  As its name implies, a 4 man quick set tent is also quick and easy to set up and provides shelter without a lot of hard work.  4 man backpacking tents are small and lightweight and most will not comfortably fit 4 people.  They are made and sold for their ease of transport and set up so that they are easily portable while backpacking and their strong suit is not the size of the accommodations they offer.

If you are looking for a 4 man tent that will provide more room than the rest, then you may want to consider a 4 man wall tent.  Due to the style and construction of wall tents, a 4 man wall tent can comfortably house 4 people.  Most wall tents are made from canvas so they are a bit heavier and more cumbersome to carry and set up, but if you are looking for space, they are an ideal choice.

Even among each style of 4 man tent, you will find that the size of any particular tent can vary widely from tent to tent or from manufacturer to manufacturer.  For this reason, it is best to look at a few different models to determine which has the size you need, as well as the options that you deem most important.  You will also find a variety of 4 man tent prices as well, so you can narrow down your choices based on your budget.

Deciding which tent is the best 4 man tent to buy is really a matter of personal preference.  If you are looking for ease of setup then a pop up, quick set or dome tent is best.  If you are going to be hiking or backpacking and need the lightest weight tent possible, then you may want to select a backpacking tent.  4 man wall tents are a great solution when you need more space, but they are not for everyone.  If you want to get a better idea of how various 4 man tent manufacturers stack up to each other, as well as the benefits of any particular model, you can do a search online to find a 4 man tent review for additional information.
