Should You Buy Used Sheds?

If you are in need of a shed and do not want to pay the prices charged for a new shed, you may be considering whether or not searching for and buying used sheds is a good idea.  While buying a used shed may sound like a good idea in order to save money, there are a few things you need to keep in mind before you embark on searching for used sheds for sale in your local vicinity.  Here are a few things to keep in mind before you make that decision.

used shedsWhen it comes to sheds, there are a number of different types of sheds and which one you are looking for may determine your decision about whether or not you should try to find a used shed.  As for the functionality of sheds, there are storage sheds, garden sheds, tool sheds, and just general outdoor sheds used for a variety of purposes.  There are also differences among sheds when it comes to the materials they are made from.  You can find wooden sheds, metal sheds, aluminum sheds or plastic sheds and the material of the shed may have a lot to do with whether or not it is worth trying to find used sheds in a specific material.

So, does functionality make a big difference in your decision of whether or not to buy used sheds?  Probably not.  The difference between the general quality of used garden sheds as opposed to used storage sheds, or used tool sheds as opposed to general used outdoor sheds that might be used to house pool supplies, children’s toys, lawn furniture or other items probably won’t make a big difference in whether or not you can find a decent quality shed that has already been used by someone else.  The actual shape of any shed you are looking for will have to be evaluated on an individual basis.

What will matter more is what the shed is constructed from.  For example, wooden sheds are usually sturdy and are intended to hold up for many years of use, and they can easily be repainted, restained or recoated to bring them back to looking like new, so buying used wooden sheds may be a very good idea.  The only thing you need to consider if you’re looking at used wood sheds is to make sure that there is no insect or water damage to the wood because that is not easily fixed without replacing the wood.  If you see that kind of damage, you should probably not buy the shed.

There can be a big variety of quality in used metal sheds or aluminum sheds, on the other hand.  Metal sheds are generally sturdier than aluminum ones, but you should check the thickness or gauge of the metal to see if it is sturdy and durable.  You should also check for rusting and denting because these are both likely to be found in used metal sheds and the extent of the damage will help you make your decision about whether they are worth purchasing.  Some dents can easily be banged out, leaving the shed looking almost like new, but rusting is a process of corrosion that not only looks bad but can weaken the structure, so if you see a lot of rusting, it’s probably best to move on to another shed.

The main issue with used plastic sheds is that they may fade over time from exposure to the sun, but other than that, there is usually nothing that deteriorates the structure and makes it less durable or capable of holding up over time.  The only thing that would damage a plastic shed primarily is a blow to a portion of the shed that could crack or break the plastic, but other than that it should be fairly impervious to water and insects and should not easily dent or won’t rust, so buying a used plastic shed may be a good investment.  Just make sure the color is not too faded out to make it look like an eye-sore if looks are important to you.

Buying used sheds is not always such an easy thing to do, but you can do a search for used sheds online to see if there are any listed in places like craigslist or on any other locally based sites (chances are you won’t have a used shed shipped to you).  You can also check with home improvement stores to see if they have any floor models or samples that they are selling.  By doing this you are in essence getting a new shed at used shed prices, which is a great deal because they are usually in great condition.  You can also check out garage sales or ask around to see if people know of anyone getting rid of a shed and then make an offer to buy it.

Buying a used shed can certainly save you money in the short term, but if you don’t thoroughly check out the condition of the shed, you may be left with something that needs to be replaced sooner than you want, negating any benefits of buying used sheds in the long term.
