Should You Buy a Plastic Shed?

By: Carports, Tents and Sheds Staff Writers

With all the types of sheds that are now available, you may be wondering if buying a plastic shed is a good decision.  As with any other type of shed, there are benefits and disadvantages to plastic sheds.  Knowing what these are will help you determine if buying a plastic shed is a wise choice, or if you would be better off with a wooden shed, a metal shed, an aluminum shed or a shed of another material.

Outdoor plastic sheds offer the same functionality as other types of sheds.  You can purchase plastic garden sheds to place in your backyard or garden.  These can add a place for storage of outdoor garden equipment, tools, potting supplies and other garden related items.  You can even use a plastic garden shed as a potting shed, for replanting, growing plants from seed, and more.

plastic shedYou can also find a wide assortment of plastic storage sheds and plastic tool sheds available.  In fact, there is not much of a difference in design between a plastic storage shed, a plastic tool shed and a plastic garden shed.  All types of plastic sheds can have multiple purposes, and since they come in an assortment of sizes and styles, you can find one that best fits your needs.

Here are some of the pros and cons of buying a plastic shed:

Pros:

Plastic sheds are an economical choice. They are typically lower in price than similar style sheds constructed from wood or metal.

Plastic sheds are durable. They will last for years with virtually no maintenance required except maybe an occasional spray with a hose to clean them off.  Wood sheds, on the other hand, must be painted or stained and resealed periodically to avoid wood rot, and you must check for insect or water damage.  Metal sheds are durable but must be checked for rust, which can occur if an area of the shed is dented or scratched.

Plastic sheds offer many options. You can find a plastic shed in almost any size and any style.  They come with different styles of doors and some even come with shelves or other accessories that can be added.  They also come in different colors and different finishes to add to the variety of options.

Plastic sheds are easy to install. Most plastic sheds assemble with ease and only come with a few parts.  They are also relatively lightweight so they are easy to transport if you purchase them from a store and need to bring them home.  If you order a plastic shed online, the lighter weight of the sheds will result in lower shipping costs than some other types of sheds.

plastic shedCons:

Plastic is not as attractive as wood. While plastic sheds have come a long way when it comes to aesthetics and many are made to resemble wood grain and come in a variety of colors, a plastic shed doesn’t have the same charm and beauty in your garden or yard as a wooden shed does.

Plastic sheds can fade. Colored plastic can fade over time if left in the sun.   Therefore, when it comes to plastic, it is not worth buying cheap plastic sheds because they will not look well in a few years.  It is worth the extra expense to get a high quality plastic shed.

There are certainly more advantages of plastic outdoor storage sheds than there are disadvantages.  When it comes to plastic sheds and storage, you can find one in just about any style, for any purpose, and with any look.  Purchasing a plastic shed from a reputable manufacturer is a wise choice to ensure that you will enjoy years of use from your shed.  Some large shed manufacturers even offer warranties with their products.   Shed companies such as Duramax, Sentinel, Arrow, Suncast and others are worth looking into to find the best plastic shed for your money.
