Should You Buy A 6 Man Tent?

If you are heading out on a camping trip with your family or a bunch of buddies and you all plan on sharing one tent, then you may want to consider bringing along a 6 man tent.  6 man tents, like their name implies, are theoretically made to house 6 people inside during a camping trip, although the truth is that unless you like sleeping on top of one another, getting 6 people inside the tent doesn’t usually result in a good night’s sleep.  But, even if getting that many people inside is a bit of stretch, they are a great option when you are looking for a tent to offer some space for a group.

6 man tentThere really isn’t much difference in the styles or designs of a 6 man camping tent compared to that of a 4 man tent, or even a 3 man tent.  The main difference is size.  The styles of the tents are similar but are just sized to accommodate a varying numbers of occupants.  The only place that you’ll really see a big difference in tent style is if you get down to a smaller, ultra lightweight tent, such as some of the 2 man tents or backpacking tents.

Most styles of tents intended to fit a group of people are dome tents, although you can also find some frame tents in this size as well.  A 6 man dome tent has a spacious open design and sets up in a snap.  In some models, these tents can have separate compartments so that not all people need to sleep or keep their belongings in the same space.  The sections of the tent function like mini rooms within the interior space.   This is especially true for those models that are sold as 6 man family tents – the fact that they are sold as family tents usually means they are sectioned off so that the parents and kids can sleep in the same tent but still have some privacy from one another (or at least as much privacy as any tent can offer!).

One thing you need to consider when you bring along a 6 man tent is that it can be somewhat heavy to tote along with you.  Because of its larger size, it will also be heavier than a smaller tent, and sometimes if you need to carry the tent a good distance before reaching your destination, you may be better off with two 3 or 4 man tents instead so that two different people can carry the tents and therefore distribute the weight.

There are a number of reputable tent companies that sell 6 person tents, including companies such as Coleman, Kelty, Eureka, The North Face, Marmot, and even L.L. Bean.  Some of these tents are 3 season tents (meaning that you can use them all year round except during harsh winters) and some companies offer 4 season 6 man tents that can be used all year long and that will really protect you from the elements, even when the weather is not cooperating.

Choosing the best 6 man tent will depend in part on what style of tent you are looking for, whether you are more interested in open space, durability, lightweight materials, or features such as mesh windows, zipper enclosures and reinforced seams.  Of course, it will also depend a lot on price.  You can shop for 6 man tents in sporting goods stores, outdoor stores, and some big box retailers (like Walmart or Target), but you can also find 6 man tents online from a large selection of companies, including Amazon and Overstock.  By searching for tents online, it makes it easier to compare features, read reviews and find the best prices on 6 man tents available, once you have narrowed down what you want.

Although a 6 man tent may not be the best of accommodations for six people at a time, owning and using one of these tents when camping with a group can provide a spacious interior in which to sleep and hang out without getting too cramped.  For that reason, it may be worth the added weight to carry and the added expense to purchase because it can make you feel more at home while you’re out in the wilderness.
